Her father put a hand on her shoulder. “It all depends on this last letter. Open it, and then we’ll talk.” Aethelflaed blew out her cheeks, cracked her knuckles¹ and tore the envelope open in one movement. She read as fast as she could.

1 Knuckles = the four bony ‘hills’ on a hand at the base of the fingers.
