Class Rules (Modals): Teaching Material

More free teaching material and resources for English teachers. Download this Class Rules worksheet pdf. for your classes! Practise CAN, CAN’t/MUSTN’T, MUST/HAVE TO and DON’T HAVE TO. The students have to cut out the rules and match them to the picture and to the right Modal Verb.

It’s useful for reminding the kids some basic rules (in my case, not rocking back on the chairs – can we start having SIT PROPERLY CLASSES on the school curriculum!?!!) a few weeks into the school year, when they start being forgotten. Grammatically it’s a good way to practise the Modals  – I want to focus on the difference between MUSTN’T and DON’T HAVE TO, for example.

Suggestion – The students have to think up some rules for different places/situations, using the same Modals:

  • You must / You have to…
  • You can…
  • You mustn’t / You can’t
  • You don’t have to…

IN THE LIBRARY – IN THE SWIMMING POOL – AT THE ZOO – WHEN YOU’RE PLAYING FOOTBALL – AT THE CINEMA – etc. etc.
