What is the difference between ‘meet’ and ‘know’ when in Spanish we say ‘conocer’? ¿Cual es la diferencia?

Look at this example:

  • Know = Sabes de Alguien

  1. I know that Brian lives in Brighton.            Sé que Brian vive en Brighton.
  2. I know Brian- he lives in Brighton.

I know who Brian is.

  • Meet = Encontrarte con Alguien

A meeting is ‘una reunión’ where people come together. ‘Meet’ es un encuentro cara a cara. Look at this example:

´I need a boyfriend!’           ‘I know a man you will like- do you want to meet him?’

‘Necesito un novio!’              ‘Conozco a un hombre que te gustará- quieres conocerle?’, (o  ‘Sé de un hombre que te gustará- quieres encontrarte con él?’)

Do you see the difference? ‘Meet’ is A face-to-face meeting, ‘Know’ es saber quien es, but it is important to know that ‘meet’ does not mean ‘conocer’, and this is why:

  1. Conocí a Juan ayer en el gimnasio. (Es decir, no le conocías antes.)
  2. I met Juan in the gym yesterday. He is my classmate at university.

In Spanish, ‘conocer’ implies the first meeting- In English you can meet your sister every day for coffee.

  • Conclusion

‘I first met Margaret 12 years ago’ (Me encontré con Margaret por primera vez hace 12 años).  Otra opción sería: ‘I have known Margaret for 12 years’ (He conocido a Margaret desde hace 12 años).

  • Extras

  • ‘Meet’ has no preposition after it: ‘I´m meeting  with  Jane before the conference to organise the details.’

But there is a phrasal verb (¿como no?) ‘meet up with….’ This means encontrarse (a veces ‘quedar’) con amigos: ‘I´m meeting up with some friends after work. We´re going to have a few drinks.’

  • How do you say ‘Me gusta conocer otros paises y culturas’?

It isn´t correct to use ‘Meet’ (it’s for people, not places) or ‘Know’ (‘Know’ tambien defiere de Conocer porque en Inglés solo es un estado, no una acción- O le conoces a Paris o no, la acción de conocer no es posible)

So, you have to use ‘get to know’ (=llegar a conocer) or simply ‘visit’ or ‘discover’.
