Is this YOUR cat? = Is this YOURS?

They’re HIS books = Those books are HIS

That’s not HER house = That house isn’t HERS

Those are ITS teeth (= Those are its: not very common)

That’s OUR car = That car is OURS

This is THEIR problem = The problem is THEIRS

 

Notice:

His dog   (1 person, 1 dog)

His dogs (1 person, 2 dogs)

Their dog (2 people, 1 dog)

Their dogs (2 people, 2 dogs)
